Energy drinks sold in stores contains harmful substances that can be detrimental to your health.

One of the most common ingredients in energy drinks are flavors, taurine, lots of sugar, Caffeine, B-vitamins, plant and herbal extracts.

Lots of sugar

The levels of sweeteners in energy drink is in excess. For instance, a tiny can of Red Bull contains 27 grams of sugar, or the equivalent of 6.43 teaspoons. Most energy drinks go for fuel preferences like glucose, fructose and sucrose, while some brands use artificial sweeteners.

Artificial Colors and Flavors

Energy drinks contain a range of natural and artificial colors and flavors, depending on the brand. Dyes present in food have been linked with ADHD and cancer.


Guarana beans are comparable to coffee beans, but they contain about twice as much caffeine. It’s yet another way energy drink manufacturers increase the caffeine content of their beverage without necessarily placing a hint on a label.

Taurine is amino acid our produced naturally by our bodies and can be found in healthy foods like fish, meat, dairy, and breast milk. It’s also added to energy drinks since some research shows its combination with caffeine increases mental performance. Taurine also helps the body to lose weight, treats congestive heart failure, and improves transportation of oxygen in the body.


Caffeine is the major ingredient in most energy drinks. An 8-ounce cup of coffee averages about 130 miligrams of caffeine. Match that to a Red Bull energy drink with 80 miligrams of caffeine, and Monster energy drinks which range from 115 miligrams to 184 miligrams of caffeine. Caffeine tolerance levels vary because of genetics and other factors, but 500 mg of caffeine, or about 5 cups of coffee, can lead to caffeine toxicity. Symptoms of caffeine toxicity includes heart palpitations, headaches, tremors, and nausea. At very high levels, caffeine toxicity can lead to seizures and stroke.

B-Complex Vitamins

Most energy drink brands usually add B vitamins. Some brands replace caffeine with massive amounts of vitamin B12. While vitamins are necessary for the body, but excess amount can be disturbing.

They’re Not Regulated

The presence of plant extracts like ginseng and ginkgo in energy drinks can be regulated as dietary supplements, not food, and avoid stricter safety restrictions. In 2011 Canada changed energy drinks from being labeled as “natural health products” to food.

They Contain Dangerous Stimulants

Some persons, especially kids have died after drinking only 1 or 2 energy drinks. A 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that the group who drank a regular energy drink had abnormal heart rhythms and high blood pressure for more than six hours. Even the control group, who was given flavored water with high amounts of sugar and caffeine didn’t experience the same level of adverse effects.
