Can Weight Loss Affect Your Period?

A woman’s monthly menstrual cycle is affected by two major hormones: progesterone and estrogen. Estrogen helps to mature the uterine lining and to mature the egg before ovulation, while progesterone basically controls the buildup of the uterine lining and helps mature and maintain the uterine lining during pregnancy.

If pregnancy fails to occur, the progesterone levels falls and the uterine lining sheds as menstruation. So, is it possible for weight loss to affect your period?

Studies have shown that women will guzzle more calories during different phases of the menstrual cycle. They appear to crave foods with high carbohydrate and fat content during menstrual periods.

A temporary PMS symptom called bloating may affect some women, making them feel heavier or fuller. Salty foods can cause water retention in the body, which portrays temporary weight gain on the scale.

It is advisable for women to avoid salty foods during and after your period. Instead, include fruits and vegetables in your diet and drink lots of water to reduce the bloated feeling.
