As kids, we were told to drink more milk for proper development of bones and to fight against cancer and diabetes. However, milk may not precisely be good for some adults. Some people who are not lactose intolerant still find it difficult to digest milk properly.

A large number of people lack the necessary enzyme needed to digest cow’s milk which is what causes people to feel constipated and bloated after taking cow milk. Also, those who are lactose intolerant can’t digest milk bringing to the conclusion that cow’s milk isn’t the best milk choice. This is why there are so many milk alternatives.

Here are a few of the most popular milk alternatives and what you should know about them:

  1. Almond milk

Advantages: Almond milk  is an ideal milk alternative because it is low in sugar, low in calories, and high in Vitamin E. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Vitamin E helps in fighting cancer, heart disease cancer, and treating eye and bone conditions.

Disadvantages: Since almond milk is made from almonds, it may not be the best alternative for people with nut allergies. Also, people with thyroid disorders may be affected by almond milk.

  1. Coconut milk

Advantages: Coconut milk has a great taste, making it ideal when used in juices, smoothies, and milkshakes. It is high in fiber, and because of the nutritional value. This milk also contains healthy fats that helps burn fat and build muscle.

Disadvantages: Coconut milk is high in saturated fat. Drinking it in large quantity can cause high cholesterol which can lead to heart disease or stroke. Coconut milk might not be best for people with nut allergies.

Advantages: Soy milk is low in sugar, which is perfect for people trying to lose weight and reduce their sugar intake. It’s an effective immune system booster because of the protein in soy milk, which is created with antibodies.

Disadvantages: Soy milk can affect hormones because it contains plenty of phytoestrogens, which are compounds that the body sees as estrogen. Consult your doctor before taking soy milk as an alternative for cow milk.

  1. Rice milk

Advantages: Rice milk is considered the most hypoallergenic, making it perfect for anyone with food allergies. Rice milk is also a great source of B Vitamins which can help accelerate your metabolism and improve your nerve function.

Disadvantages: One major disadvantage of rice milk is that it isn’t a good source of protein. So, it’s not guaranteed to fill you up like the other milk. Also, rice milk is low in calcium and high in starch. If you’re trying to cut out sugar, rice milk might not be good for you, especially for diabetics.

Hemp Milk

Advantages: The amazing benefits of hemp milk has started making it very popular. Hemp milk is derived from the seeds of the hemp plant and contains vitamins; Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and Vitamin E.
