Woman Addicted to Eating Clay Quits Job to Sell it Online (Video)

A 36-year-old woman who is strongly addicted to eating clay has decided to turn her strange addiction in a business by selling it online to cater for people with weird cravings like her.

Mandisa Manye from Birmingham, has an unusual addiction for eating clay. Her craving first started as a child and as she grew older, her odd cravings developed. Manye said she started eating chalk at her school when she was a young. She persisted with her chalk-eating obsession when she was in high school until she discovered clay, which she started purchasing online.

Manye, a qualified science teacher, decided to quit her job and start her own online clay-selling business so that people with same addiction as her can buy online.

The strange act of eating clay falls under the disorder known as pica. People who have pica hunger after non-nutritive substances like clay, talcum powder, chalk, cigarette ash, sand, ice, coal or pencil erasers, etc.

Pica can be caused by anemia or deficiency of iron. However, eating these substances does not provide the body with the required minerals.

According to some unsubstantiated evidence, consuming clay can lead to:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): Some research claim that taking a type of clay by mouth for 8 weeks causes pain, discomfort, and bloating in people with IBS who have diarrhea.
  • Poisoning
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
